ROYAL HUA HIN

SITUATION AND HISTORY

The Royal Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest 18-hole international-standard golf course and is located just 5 minutes from Hua Hin town center. The golf course was built in 1924 to cater to British railway workers and the Thai aristocracy living in the area. The Royal Hua Hin is located right next to the town's railway station. The course was designed by a Scottish railway engineer.

Hua Hin Golf Course is built on natural terrain and nestled between spectacular rocky hills. It is an older, traditional British golf course. Several holes offer excellent views of the Gulf of Thailand and the city center.

A major renovation in the 1980s brought this course up to international standards, despite its age. The fairways are now lined with mature trees, providing plenty of shaded areas.

However, don't think that a visit to Thailand's oldest golf course is just a trip down memory lane. Every golfer's game will be tested here, with several tight, tree-lined fairways, many beautifully doglegged holes, and relatively small, circular greens to hit, which are usually elevated. The bunkers are relatively modest, and the course may not be as well-maintained as some courses in the Hua Hin area, but the Royal Hua Hin does have some charming and enjoyable features in its treasure chest.

There's a good chance there will be monkeys on the uphill, par-4 13th. Along this fairway, small macaque monkeys enjoy the surrounding vegetation and occasionally take an interest in a golf ball or two. Small owls keep watch just past the green of the par-4 7th. At the par-3 14th and par-5 3rd, temples cling to the sides of tree-covered hills. While one part of the course plays beneath a magnificent tree-covered rock ridge, the other offers occasional glimpses of the ocean from the two slightly higher sections of the course.

Actual playing conditions vary throughout the year, ranging from very muddy during the rainy season to hard ground when the course is at its peak during the winter months. Green maintenance is more regular throughout the year. The English of the service staff is satisfactory as many foreigners enjoy playing at Royal Hua Hin.

Snack kiosks are located on site every three holes, allowing all golfers to play comfortably.

CLUB HOUSE AND FACILITIES

A renovated clubhouse makes for a lovely 19th hole and provides a chance to reminisce about the
golfers who have passed through the club's doors over the last century of its existence
Royal Hua Hin. If only for the historical value and convenience of
location, Royal Hua Hin is a course that should be played at least once
by all golf travelers in Hua Hin.
