Red Mountain Golf Club

It's not hard to understand why this Phuket golf course was named Red Mountain. However, it's harder to imagine how such a spectacular landscape, where soft red rock and dense jungle are the main ingredients, could be transformed into a course that is both challenging and playable.

Red Mountain Golf Course opened in 2007 and is now considered Phuket's most spectacular golf course. The course was designed to take advantage of a wide variety of terrain and dramatic elevation changes, making it the most rugged course in Phuket.

The entire Red Mountain site is an abandoned tin mine. The hole layout explores all four corners of the former tin mine, providing a memorable tour of Phuket's historic landscapes. Cliffs and ravines carved into the sandy tailings over the years by storm waters are featured on several holes. Towering cliffs cut into the hills and flooded canyons frame several other holes. Golfers face all of nature's hazards: wind, water, slopes, and drops. This is the highest golf course on Phuket Island, and spectacular views are offered from many points along the course.

The concept of variety has been carried over to all areas of Red Mountain. There are large and small greens, some with subtle breaks, others with wilder contours. The greens are covered with Bermuda grass, which provides fast but soft putting surfaces. The fairways and tees are covered with Seashore Paspalum, a popular grass used on other Thai championship courses. Local wild grasses have been preserved in some rough areas to complement the natural look.

As far as playability goes, the last six holes and the final stretches aren't much more challenging. The sheer drops, red rock cliffs, and dense tropical vegetation combine to make these six holes some of the most spectacular in Thailand. A breathtaking panorama awaits you off the back of the 16th green. The short par-3 17th is a spectacular downhill run: hitting a postage stamp deep into the jungle has never been so much fun! The following downhill par-5 requires strategic tee-to-green placement and can easily add double-digits to an otherwise respectable scorecard. Before this magnificent closing six, the rest of the course contains its share of undulations, rocky outcrops, wonderful risk holes, and numerous water hazards. To keep your immensely scenic Red Mountain round from turning into a rocky horror show, the advice is simple: consult your caddie carefully about club selection, aim straight, and trust your swing.

CLUB HOUSE AND FACILITIES

For golfers looking to spend more time on the course, there are excellent practice facilities, a grass driving range, and a modern clubhouse fully equipped for teeing off on the 19th hole. Golf carts are mandatory at Red Mountain, and that's a good thing because anyone who chooses to walk on this course will certainly regret it.

It's not often that a course like this is created. Hats off to Red Mountain for what the club's literature describes as "Phuket's most exciting golf course"... perhaps "Asia's" could also apply.
